One of the biggest and most awaited festivals of India- Diwali. We can’t deny how old we become, or wherever in the World we are, we don’t forget to return to our home in this festival of lights. But wait, is Diwali now really the festival of lights? Or has it become something else? Is it now an auspicious festival or a gloomy one?
You all must be wondering why am I not referring to our festive festival as the festival of lights and raising questions on it regarding auspicious and gloomy?
Well, the question isn’t raised on the festival, but on the actions, we do at this festival. Diyas and candles were lited on this day to guide us from darkness to light. But now we endlessly burn firecrackers, spend all our money and night on making the upcoming days turn into darkness. Isn’t it the irony, that the festival whose supposed to bring light is now bringing darkness to us in respect of the environment, health, and hate?
I know, we used to associate this Diwali festival with firecrackers and all, but we now also need to understand that with the advancement of technologies there has been an increase in pollution levels too. Every day, we listen to global warming, greenhouse gas, and UV Rays, but we just simply ignore it thinking someone else will think about it. But this all will lead to no one thinking and our doings transferred to our children.
Sustainability is a concept where we think of our future generations. We know our resources aren’t unlimited, they are scarce. And that’s where all the problem arises. Now’s the time to think about it, if we don’t want our children to remember Diwali as the festival of darkness instead of light, if we don’t want them to think of it as a gloomy festival, instead of an auspicious one.
