World Ozone Day is widely known on September 16 every year to spread awareness among people about the ozonosphere and find solutions to preserve it. On this day, people from all over the world conduct seminars and campaigns on the ozone layer. Teachers teach students about the importance of the ozonosphere and activities are organized to spread awareness.

WHAT IS THE OZONE LAYER?

The ozonosphere protects the earth from the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun. Ozone is formed from three atoms of oxygen. It is a reactive gas that is represented by O3. It occurs naturally also as a man-made product within the Earth’s upper atmosphere.

The ozone layer is present in Earth’s atmosphere in the lower portion of the stratosphere and has high concentrations of ozone. It is formed through the interactions of solar UV radiation with molecular oxygen O2.

It reduces the harmful UV radiation reaching the surface. The main cause of ozone is the ozone hole which is manufactured by chemicals. The principal aim of the Montreal protocol is to guard the ozonosphere by taking measures to regulate the total global production and consumption of drugs that deplete it, with the ultimate objective of their elimination on the idea of developments in the knowledge domain and technological information.

MONTREAL PROTOCOL –

The Montreal Protocol is around several groups of ozone substances. The groups of chemicals are classified into the chemical family and are listed in groups to the Montreal Protocol text. The Montreal Protocol requires the control of nearly 100 chemicals, in many categories. For each group of chemicals, they set a timetable. The timetable set by the Montreal Protocol applies to the consumption of ozone substances. The percentage reductions are related to the baseline year for the substance. The Protocol does not forbid the use of existing substances beyond the phase-out dates.

THE OZONE HOLE AND SCIENCE –

The phenomenon of ozone over Antarctica was referred to as the ‘ozone hole’. The satellite image of the hole has become a worldwide symbol of this environmental threat that has helped mobilize public support for the Montreal Protocol. The work of environmental researchers continues to play a prominent role in informing policymaking under the Montreal Protocol. Images and scientific bulletins about ozone depletion are useful communication tools to the general public about progress made and challenges ahead.

What You Can Do –

Protect yourself from the ozone layer by avoiding sun exposure. Take care of your appliances to attenuate ozonosphere impact. World Ozone Day offers a chance to focus global attention and action on these environmental impacts.

THEME OF THE OZONE DAY –

The theme for the celebration of this year's World Ozone Day to be marked on 16th September is “Montreal Protocol – Keeping us, our food, and vaccines cool”.
